DESCRIPTION

Ilex glabra 'Densa'

This selection of native inkberry has a broad upright habit and tolerates heat, drought, sun, and shade. It grows very nicely in urban areas and is pest and disease-resistant. Flowers give way to black berries which mature in early fall and persist through the winter unless consumed by local birds.

Native Range

Wooded swamps, low woods, and thickets; mostly along the coast from Nova Scotia to Florida to eastern Texas.

INTERESTING FACTS

 

Inkberry honey is highly rated and is produced in parts of the Southeastern U. S. Beekeepers release bees from late April to early June to coincide with inkberry flowering time.

 

GROWING TIPS

 

Prefers average, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Female plants need a male pollinator in order to produce berries. Requires little pruning unless used as a hedge.
