Olive-green foliage on woody branches forms a neat mound that serves as the backdrop to delicate, white flowers that bloom in spring and move like butterflies in the breeze. Foliage turns russet-red in the autumn. Perfect for mass plantings. it is a magnet for native insects and butterflies.

Native Range

Found in dry to moist, upland woods and rocky banks, mostly in the mountains.

 

INTERESTING FACTS

This plant was used by Native Americans as an emetic for a yearly cleansing, thus giving it the common name Indian Physic. It is likely that Bowman's Root also refers to this practice since English settlers often called the Native Americans "Bowmen".

 

GROWING TIPS

Bowman's Root thrives best in moist, acid to neutral, humus rich soil, but is quite drought tolerant once established. It prefers shade in the hottest part of the day. Use as backround plant in perennial beds or in mass plantings to give full airy effect.
