Aronia melanocarpa 'Elata'

This compact deciduous shrub offers four-season beauty. Dainty white flowers in spring are followed by lush, shiny foliage in summer. The dark berries backed by the purple and red fall foliage is superb. The berries persist providing food for the birds and other wildlife all winter long.  Low maintenance and tolerant of a wide range of growing conditions.

Moist woods or drier clearing or thickets from Minnesota East to Maine and south from Arkansas to Georgia.

Interesting Facts

 

Chokeberry gets its name from its sour fruit which can be sweetened with added sugar. While grocery stores offer the Aronia juice as an alternative to cranberry juice, native birds feast on the berries straight off the bush, whether sweet or sour!
