This incredibly adaptable perennial features deep green foliage on upright stems that end with 4" to 6" clusters of fragrant, violet-blue flowers in July and August. It doesn't mind the heat and thrives even in poor soil. Native insects and butterflies prize its bloom. Great for massing, tolerates some shade.

Native Range

Found in eastern US as far west as Kansas in open woods, sandy areas, pinelands and dry bluffs.

Interesting Facts

Butterflies are active during the day. They use their colors to attract a mate or to warn predators that they are unpleasant to eat. In contrast, moths are usually dull in color and are active at dusk or during the night.


Prefers average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Grows best in sandy or clay soils.
