American chestnut
Castanea dentata

A legendary tree, American Chestnut, disease has removed it in tree form from American forests but it is still out there as a shrubby understory tree with great pollinator value. Flowers, when they occur, are still a native pollinator magnet & it is still a host for 100's of butterfly & moth species.

In the past, the wood from this species was the primary source of tannin for households.

The seeds from this tree offer a versatile culinary experience,  suitable for consumption in their raw or cooked state. Additionally, they can be finely ground into a powder, and used in bread recipes.


GROWING TIPS

American Chestnut flourishes in environments with moderate water usage and prefers exposure to sun or partial shade. It thrives best in average, well-drained soil conditions.
