Hypericum frondosum 'Sunburst' Sunburst Golden St. Johnswort
Sunburst Golden St. Johnswort Hypericum frondosum 'Sunburst'
'Sunburst' is a great selection with larger, golden flowers and a more compact habit than the species. It flowers in June and July to the delight of honeybees. In autumn the seed capsules form and provide food for songbirds and other small wildlife. The blue-green foliage is attractive all season and is evergreen in the southern part of its growing range. Dr. Richard Lighty, formerly of Mt. Cuba Center in Delaware made this selection. This is an excellent choice for informal hedges, shrub borders, foundation plantings and is very effective when planted in mass.

To attract songbirds to your garden plant natives that provide them with their natural diet of fruit, berries or nuts. They will also need shelter and nesting sites from trees and densley branched shrubs. Last but not least, provide them with a clean source of watrer.
Easy to grow in average, well-drained soils in full sun or part shade. Prefers rich, sandy loams but it is generally drought tolerant once established. In some areas the top growth will die back but will regrow and flower from the root. In southern areas it is evergreen or semi-evergreen.
