DESCRIPTION

Ilex verticillata 'Southern Gentleman'

This male pollinator for several female varieties of Winterberry including 'Winter Red', has dark, glossy foliage and dense form that makes it a perfect grouping or hedging plant. Although berryless, it does form large thickets that are the favorite nesting area for many songbirds.

Native Range

Wet woods, swamps, and thickets; Newfoundland and Quebec through Ontario to Michigan and Minnesota south to Indiana, Missouri, and Florida.

Holly plants are dioecious, meaning that some plants are female and others male and you’ll need both to produce the beautiful, large, red berries. 

GROWING TIPS

Grows best in medium to moist, acidic soil, although in full sun to part shade. Tolerates poorly drained soil such as boggy or swampy conditions. Prune to shape in early spring just before new growth begins.
