Narrow spikey green foliage forms and upright, open mound that provides the backdrop for tall, airy pink to purplish colored seed heads starting in August. Its color intensifies as weather cools while its seeds provide a banquet for seed loving native birds. Easy to grow and poor soil tolerant.

Native Range

Native to New England, south to Florida and west to Texas and the lower Midwest. Found on sandy, pine openings, prairies and dry, exposed ledges.

Prefers sandy or rocky, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. This is a clump forming ornamental grass that does not spread aggressively.
