Silphium perfoliatum

Big and bold, Silphium is a towering presence in the landscape reaching up to 10' tall with large, unique leaves which form a cup that holds water for days. Big yellow daisies extend above the foliage through the summer attracting native wildlife for nectar and water. Thrives in moist conditions!

Low woods, thickets, meadows and stream beds from North Dakota south to Louisiana and east to Maine and Georgia

Interesting Facts

This plant is steeped in Native American lore! Its dried sap was chewed like chewing gum to freshen breath. Braves would consume a drink derived from its rhizome to purify themselves before embarking upon important undertakings.


Prefers average, medium to wet soils in full sun. Will tolerates some drought once established. It will reseed itself  in areas with optimum contitions.
