Sweetbay’s are an elegant, multi-stemmed, small tree, perfect for patios and other smaller spaces. The shiny, deep green foliage provides the perfect backdrop for the fragrant, white, spring blossoms. The flowers are replaced by red fruits in the fall, attracting songbirds and other beneficial wildlife. Prefers moist, acidic soil and will even thrive in heavy clay.

Native Range

Found in open woodlands, shaded woods and swamps.


The fruit is eaten by gray squirrels, turkey and quail as well as a variety of songbirds including vireos, towhees, Northern flicker and blue jays.



Plant in moist, acidic soil, in full sun or part shade away from harsh winter winds. If necessary, prune during the growing season and not in the winter. Sweetbay doesn’t have any serious insect or disease problems.
