Native Range

Commonly found in shaded woods and roadcuts over limestone substrates and outcroppings.

Brush piles provide cover for small birds and mammals. Brush piles should be loosely arranged so animals can move through them. Place large logs at the bottom and smaller limbs on the top.

Grows best in organically rich, moist, well-drained soils. Grows well in full sun in the northern part of its range but needs afternoon shade in southern areas. Remove stems of faded flower to encourage continued bloom. In cold winter climates, winter mulch applied after the ground freezes helps prevent root heaving. Divide clumps in spring every 3-4 years to keep plants vigorous.
